Marie Daily taught kindergarten in the Flowing Wells School District and later stepped away from the classroom to raise the couple's three children, Eric, Katie, and Alex, all of whom went on to graduate from Flowing Wells. A certified teacher, she holds a bachelor's degree in journalism, a bachelor's degree in education, and a master's degree in early childhood education. In 1995 she and her husband Kevin founded the Flowing Wells Neighborhood Association and Community Coalition. She has served on the board of the Flowing Wells Educational Foundation for 20 years, currently as Vice President, and organized the district's Grad Night celebration for over 15 years. She co-authored Images of America: Flowing Wells, the photographic history of the community published by Arcadia Publishing, with all proceeds donated back to the neighborhood. Today Marie is back in a Flowing Wells classroom as a volunteer, running the Ready Bodies, Learning Minds motor lab at Douglas Elementary, a program that develops the physical and sensory foundations young children need before they can sit still, hold a pencil, pay attention, and learn to read.

Original Apartheid Hustler is the remarkable story of an enigma, Dugmore Boetie, a writer best known for Familiarity is the Kingdom of the Lost (1969), his humorous autobiographical novel narrating the topsy-turvy life, from the 1920s to 1950s, of a fictionalised Sophiatown-born youth. Engaging multiple registers, Benjamin N. Lawrance and Vusumuzi R. Kumalo offer a biographical study, a literary deconstruction of Boetie’s writings, and a decolonial meditation on apartheid-era exploitation and erasure. Based on archival research and interviews with Boetie’s family and friends today, the authors take the reader on a quest to understand Boetie’s background, his struggle to find his place as an artist and writer, and his collaborations and interactions with prominent Black and white intellectuals, including Ruth First, Nat Nakasa, and Nadine Gordimer. Drawing on historical and literary analysis, the authors unravel the webs of fact, fantasy, and myth, exposing the highly racialised socio-cultural, political, legal, and intellectual violence Boetie and his legacy suffered during and after apartheid. They reveal Boetie’s resilient self-fashioning, his multiple fabricated identities, and the concealment of his disability and political activities.
